DiskMonitor - FAQ

Description

DiskMonitor® enables network administrators and users to easily monitor network and local drive usage. Using DiskMonitor users can receive email notification when a drive is running low on space.

Receiving email notification isn't the only feature though. DiskMonitor enables users to review drive usage over time. This feature enables users to determine when a drive is likely to fill or how often large amounts of data are transferred to and from the drive.

DiskMonitor also enables users to recurs drives to determine what folders are taking up the most space. Along side this feature users can generate reports which can be imported into spreadsheet programs.

DiskMonitor consists of three components. A user interface for configuring DiskMonitor, a service that does the work whenever the system is running, and a tray icon for visual alerts and invoking the user interface.

Features

  • Monitors network shares
  • Sends email notifications that include a report of all monitored drives
  • Generates configurable charts that show off drive usage over time
  • Generates comma separated reports of drive and folder usage
  • Supports MAPI and SMTP
  • Configurable monitor interval
  • Runs on Windows 2000/XP
  • DSM utilizes Windows Services so drives and shares can be monitored while no user is logged on. (Note: The personal version only runs on workstation versions of Windows 2000 and XP but can map up to 4 remote shares)

Choosing a Version

There are three versions of DiskMonitor to choose from. They are DiskMonitor Workstation, DiskMonitor Server, and DiskMonitor Network.

DiskMonitor Workstation runs on Windows NT Workstation 4.0 SP6, Windows 2000 Professional, and Windows XP Professional. DiskMonitor Workstation monitors all local drives and up to 4 network drives.

DiskMonitor Server runs on Windows NT Workstation/Server 4.0 SP6, Windows 2000 Professional/Server, and Windows XP Professional. DiskMonitor Server monitors all local drives and up to 4 network drives.

DiskMonitor Network runs on Windows NT Workstation/Server 4.0 SP6, Windows 2000 Professional/Server, and Windows XP Professional. DiskMonitor Network monitors all local drives and up to 1024 network drives.

Screen Shots

The user interface has three views. There is a tree view that displays all local drives and monitored shares. To the right is a list view that displays detailed information about the drive or share. Lastly, there is a log view that displays messages generated by the DiskMonitor service.

Another shot shows the folder information for a selected network share. The total size and file count is included and optionally sorted by size. Also notice the log view has been hidden.

This shot shows the chart dialog. Virtually all aspects of the chart can be modified and saved for later viewing. This functionality enables easy viewing of multiple formats.

When configuring an alert, important information regarding the drive or share is included. Email notifications can be generated when free space drops below a percentage or actual gigabytes, megabytes, kilobytes, or bytes free.
